Doing my windows 2008 R2 upgrade exams at the moment and in my quest to build a lab quickly I came across details on how to boot to windows 2008 r2 or windows 7 fromUSB stick below shows what to do.

from a DOS prompt execute: diskpart with admin if using UAC

list disk

select disk 1 (assuming disk 1 was your thumb drive in the above list disk command)

clean

create partition primary

select partition 1

active

format fs=fat32

assign

exit

Then

xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\ (assumes your dvd is drive D: and your thumb drive is drive E:\, adjust accordingly)

eyeOS is one of the first Open Source projects to create a whole Web Operating System that does currently provide a default desktop with some base applications – some of which include: Word Processor, SpreadSheets, Calendar, Contacts, mp3 player, and an RSS feed reader. Version 1.2 brought with it the capability to read and write Microsoft Word files, and version 1.5 brough with the capability to read and write Microsoft Excel files and read Microsoft Powerpoint files. I’ve been playing with this for the past month and it rocks below is some info from crunch base with on how to install this on a linux Lamp server.

After two years, the eyeOS Team published eyeOS 1.0. eyeOS 1.0 introduced some new web technologies, like eyeSoft, a ports-based web software installation system – analogous to apt-get for Debian based Linux distributions. Version 1.0 also gave users the ability to develop new applications using eyeOS’s integrated IDE: eyeOS Toolkit. It can be installed through the eyeSoft system. This allows anyone to create their own repository for eyeOS and distribute eyeOS Applications automatically to its users.

Install

first connect to the machine using root account and do:

nano /etc/apt/sources.list

at the end of the file put this line:

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner

now save and exit and execute:

apt-get update

when the command ends execute:

apt-get install sun-java6-jre openoffice.org zip unzip python-support python-simplejson recoll libimage-exiftool-perl mysql-server phpmyadmin php5-imap php5-sqlite php5-gd php5-curl php5-mysql xvfb subversion

during the installation for all those packages it gonna ask differents things about the license of java, the password the mysql server and the basic conf of phpmyadmin, reading what every question ask should be enough for underestand.

now download stompy doing:

wget http://stomppy.googlecode.com/files/stomp.py_3.0.2_all.deb

and do:

dpkg -i stomp.py_3.0.2_all.deb

now download kaazing and activemq doing:

wget http://kaazingcorp.cachefly.net/org/download/kaazing-gateway-demos-8.12_2-bin.tar.gz

and:

tar -xzf kaazing-gateway-demos-8.12_2-bin.tar.gz

modify the conf of kaazing how the eyeos2 manual says (i don’t remember now how it goes )

and execute both doing:

nohup /root/apache-activemq-5.1.0/bin/activemq &
nohup /root/kaazing-gateway-8.12_2/bin/gateway.start &

now execute office support with:

su www-data -c ‘soffice “-accept=socket,host=localhost,port=2002;urp;” -headless -display :1.0′

now do:

cd /var/www

and do:

svn co https://code.eyeos.org/trunk .

when it finish do:

chown -R www-data.www-data .
chmod -R 750 .

and then enter to the mysql doing:

mysql -u root -p

enter the password that you putted during the installation of mysql-server and when you are inside mysql console execute the following:

CREATE DATABASE eyeos;
GRANT ALL ON eyeos.* TO ‘eyeos’@'localhost’ IDENTIFIED BY ‘somepasword’;
flush privileges;
quit

with this you create one database called eyeos and one user with all the rights over the eyeos database called eyeos with the password you wrote where is somepassword.

the last you need to do is enter with a browser to “http://youserveraddres/install” and install eyeos.

for execute realtime and office support after restarting the machine do:

nano /etc/init.d/eyeos

put this in the file:

#!/bin/sh
nohup /root/apache-activemq-5.1.0/bin/activemq &
nohup /root/kaazing-gateway-8.12_2/bin/gateway.start &
su www-data -c ‘soffice “-accept=socket,host=localhost,port=2002;urp;” -headless -display :1.0′

and do:

chmod +x /etc/init.d/eyeos
update-rc.d eyeos defaults

Bio

eyeOS is being developed as a community effort with a company that provides professional services. The core team of developers is based out of Barcelona, Spain.

As Google have just announced chrome OS I thought I’d
check out the binary download from hexxeh

http://chromeos.hexxeh.net/

Chrome OS Flow is actually an older, yet user-friendly version that works on most hardware. Vanilla comes from daily Chromium OS builds and doesn’t work with a wide array of devices. But Hexxeh is close to release daily VM builds of Chrome OS Vanilla, as evidenced by this screenshot that shows Chromium OS R12 running in VirtualBox.

Recently I’ve been managing a large number of redhat 5.3 ES 5 guests running on a ESX 3.5 Cluster at work, as i wanted to understand how KVM compares to vmware I setup a KVM host on my Linux server at home, the following steps takes you through the procedure.

First check if your CPU supports hardware virtualization

should display something, e.g. like this:

egrep ‘(vmx|svm)’ –color=always /proc/cpuinfo

root@server1:~# egrep ‘(vmx|svm)’ –color=always /proc/cpuinfo
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht syscall nx mmxext
fxsr_opt rdtscp lm 3dnowext 3dnow rep_good nopl pni cx16 lahf_lm cmp_legacy svm extapic cr8_legacy 3dnowprefetch
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht syscall nx mmxext
fxsr_opt rdtscp lm 3dnowext 3dnow rep_good nopl pni cx16 lahf_lm cmp_legacy svm extapic cr8_legacy 3dnowprefetch
root@server1:~#

Then install KVM

apt-get install ubuntu-virt-server python-vm-builder

adduser `id -un` libvirtd

You need to log out and log back in for the new group membership to take effect.

Its finally happened Xen didn’t work for Citrix the major open source players moved over to KVM.

The major concerns were that, over time, Citrix would abandon the development of Xen to focus on a proprietary hypervisor, that Citrix could try to influence the Xen development to provide an indirect advantage to Microsoft and/or that Citrix could use its influence on the Xen project to damage all the competitors that were relying on it (at that time Virtual Iron, Novell, Red Hat, Sun and Oracle).

After the XenSource acquisition, some major vendors (Red Hat and IBM for example) and individual contributors lost interest in the Xen project and started to focus on KVM (IBM effort, Red Hat effort). Possibly because of this relationship between Citrix and Microsoft, possibly because Citrix has never been an open source champion.

Of course VMware did all its best to facilitate the exodus from the Xen project.

virtualization.info is unable to exactly track or measure the Citrix contributions to the Xen project since the XenSource acquisition, which made progresses in the last two years and has an impressive roadmap.

People more informed on this aspect are welcome to comment to the post with details.

For sure Citrix approached the open source world from different angles: it invested in the networking vendor Vyatta, which competes against Cisco an open source software router; it’s behind the development of the first open source virtual switch for virtual infrastructures, the Open Virtual Switch, and now it’s supporting the creation of an open source cloud computing platform, the Xen Cloud Platform (XCP).

Whatever the company has done so far, it was not enough to convince Linus Torvalds and the other Linux maintainers to include Xen in the kernel, side by side with KVM.

It seems like just a technical issue, but maybe it’s more than that.

The Citrix new move to the open source world is joining the Linux Foundation.

The official reason behind this move is to ensure that the Linux operating system works the best inside its XCP cloud and in the upcoming client hypervisor XenClient:

“The Linux Foundation provides a neutral forum for collaborative work on requirements for Linux and complementary projects such as the Xen Project, Xen Client hypervisor Initiative (XCI) and Xen Cloud Platform (XCP) initiative,” said Ian Pratt, founder and chair of Xen.org and vice president of Advanced Products at Citrix Systems. “Citrix has joined the Linux Foundation both in its role as leader of the Xen Project and because it ships commercial products based on Xen.”

In addition to developing the Xen hypervisor, the Xen community is working on the development of complete client hypervisor and cloud virtualization platform products, which incorporate Linux as an embedded, secure, optimized run time for the Virtual Machine Monitor. The Xen community also develops open source technology to permit Linux to run with optimal performance on other hypervisors, such as Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware ESX Server.

Anyway, it’s probably safe to speculate that more than anything else, Citrix wants to see Xen shipped out-of-the-box with every Linux distribution in the market. And becoming a Linux Foundation member may be the first step to achieve the task.

The latest information from the Android engineering team suggests that owners of T-Mobile’s G1 smartphone will be able to load the Android 1.6 firmware after all, rebuffing official tweets that originally suggested the opposite.

With Android 1.6 “Donut” update around the corner, there has been some talk that owners of T-Mobile’s G1 smartphone may not be able to run the software. As Geek’s Joel Evans reported last month, current Android 1.5 “Cupcake” update has been thought to have marked the end of the line for G1 owners. Citing Engadget’s report, Joel explained that engineers assigned on the Android project didn’t believe at the time that the next Android release will fit into G1’s tiny internal flash memory. T-Mobile denied the report, adding to the overall confusion.

A new report now claims the opposite, providing a solid evidence that G1 owners may not be left out of the loop after all. According to AndroidGuys citing the official Android for Developers blog, the 1.6 firmware page specifically mentions the new text-to-speech feature in conjunction with the G1, strongly indicating that the device will be able to run Android 1.6 after all. The New Platform Technologies section at the official Android for Developers blog says the following:

Android 1.6 features a multi-lingual speech synthesis engine called Pico. It allows any Android application to “speak” a string of text with an accent that matches the language. The engine supports the following languages: English (American and British accents), French, Italian, German and Spanish. If you’re using a T-Mobile G1 or Dream device, you’ll need to download the SpeechSynthesis Data Installer from Android Market, which includes the “voices” needed by the text-to-speech engine.

Anyone new to Ubuntu should checkout the links at the end of this post for useful Information on books and how to get started.

How I started with Ubuntu

A few years ago I was given a Ubutnu Horay Hedgehog 5.04 CD as I followed all things Microsoft not knowing the power of what I’d just had been given I took no notice and I threw it to the back of the draw, the reason for this was, I’d tried various Linux distributions before and I found them difficult to install and at that time getting free support was nonexistent normally asking for help involved getting flamed on a IRC channels or email, because unless you could understand bash scripting or had a hacking background, the Linux guru’s would not want you into there world, at that time Linux was like a Black Box closed and not open to new comers.

Then around the time of Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 release, a friend I worked with showed me the latest Ubuntu distribution working on his Sony Laptop, he demonstrated a cube spinning on a windows manager and evolution connected to the exchange mail server, the machine was quick stable and didn’t crash what’s more the updates seemed to happen and there were no viruses to bother about. To see this made me rethink my thoughts on Linux and Ubuntu and that night I downloaded the latest Ubuntu ISO from a Mirror and from that moment on I’ve been a fan of the Ubuntu distribution and its community. The reason I’m a fan is because the community all works together whether it’s a graphics artist helping with graphics or a programmer helping with a bug fix all are equal, and that’s refreshing from a newbie’s point of view because when you post questions you don’t need to worry your question will be seen as a stupid one as the community take it as we all started once approach.

The latest release Karmic Koala, 9.10 is being released at the end of this month, and I’ve just been using the alpha stage 6 release which is the last development release before going live, in my opinion this is the best release of Ubuntu thus far. It installs within 5mins and it installs straight no fuss it offers options like encryption of home directory, fast boot times and its graphical interface has improved to put it on a par with Microsoft’s Aero Glass effects found in Windows vista and 7. I could continue writing about the brilliance of Ubuntu for another 500 words, but as this is a blog I suggest anyone who wants a stable free Operating system that can grow as your skills grow should try, Ubuntu, this doesn’t mean Windows is bad oh no the latest windows 7 offering is the best Desktop Operating System Microsoft has ever produced, but its just not free and Isn’t supported by a worldwide community. With the onset of Google’s Chrome OS coming in 2010 Linux distributions are here to stay and it seems open source software development is now on a rapid rise, I hope that Ubuntu continues to get the support it requires in future releases as currently it’s the best Linux desktop offering on the market by far not just because of the software, but also because of the community and its ethics. Below shows a history and a timeline of Ubuntu releases upto the next release Lucid Lynx 10.04.
